There is such an important conversation I’d like to have with you right now.
So much of therapy, coaching, and wellness is rightly focusing on self‑regulation, helping clients to settle in their nervous system, to soothe, to ground, to find calm. The work of Stephen Porges and his polyvagal theory has been truly revolutionary for our field.
Without this safety, without this more regulated nervous system, the system will stay stuck. The energy simply cannot flow. The capacity to be present in this moment is absent. Focus narrows and choice disappears. Curiosity fades, and the entire focus of the system becomes survival.
This is true… and yet there is more.
Calm Isn’t the Healing
Calm is the doorway, but it is not the destination. Safety is the gate. And what lies on the other side of that gate is true, significant, and sustainable transformation into conscious living, coherent choice, and the unfolding of the evolutionary potential of ourselves and our clients.
Regulation is beautiful, it is necessary, and it is incomplete.
When a client comes to us dysregulated, overwhelmed, anxious, or shut down, our first responsibility is to invite safety, to orient their system to the present moment, to remind the body that it is safe right here right now. This is indeed sacred work. And it does not happen instantaneously, depending on the current capacity of that nervous system. This may take multiple sessions, months, even longer.
But if our vision stops at feeling calm again, we will keep our clients in a two‑dimensional landscape where the goal becomes comfort rather than consciousness, momentary relief rather than relationship with self, disappearance of symptoms rather than the expansion of capacity where those physical, emotional or relationship symptoms are no longer required.
In Conscious EFT, we honour this necessity for regulation in what we call Phase Two of a four‑phase process. It is essential, but it is not sufficient. It steadies the biology, yes, and then the deeper invitation begins:
From this calm… how now do you want to live?
When Current Life Touches an Old Bruise
This is where the work moves beyond regulation and into real transformation.
Rather than trying to fight or silence the activation, we begin to see it as information, evidence that current life has brushed against an old bruise in the relational and energetic field.
In the accompanying video, I share two simple, everyday examples that illustrate what lies beyond nervous system regulation and how this deeper work unfolds in real time. I invite you to watch and feel into how these moments reveal the pathway from calm into coherence, and from survival into conscious choice.
From Calm to Coherence
When we help a client move from dysregulated to regulated, we have not finished the work, we have just begun it. We have simply opened the gate to transformation.
Beyond a regulated, calm nervous system biology lies coherence, a beautiful lived experience where nervous system, consciousness, and choice begin to harmonise, where the client builds their capacity to hold both their woundedness, the way they have been protecting that wound, and their wisdom. Where they no longer react to life in an attempt to protect the bruise, but instead begin to respond from grounded choice.
This is where Transformational Intelligence lives.
Not just feeling better in this moment… but being more alive and vibrant.
If we do not engage this powerful Phase Three and Phase Four work, life will simply continue to press on the bruise and the pain will continue, again and again. Regulation becomes a loop of soothing without true resolution. This is what the majority of the helping fields are offering now.
So a gentle invitation to you, as a practitioner, or practitioner‑in‑becoming:
Yes, notice where the system settles. Celebrate it. Honour it.
And then… learn how to invite the next step. How to go beyond calm and begin exploring the pattern of bruising?
To create the conditions for your client’s own wisdom to bring healing to that bruise?
We don’t regulate the nervous system so that the world becomes more coherent. We regulate the nervous system so we can stay connected to ourselves while meeting the world as it is.
Safety opens the gate so that expanded consciousness can walk through.
And beyond that threshold of regulation lies growth, choice, love, and the living expression of who we truly are.
With warmth and deep respect for your devotion to your own growth, and your devotion to this work.
Nancy
