Apparently Nancy is Still Doing It

Have you ever noticed an old response returning and immediately thought:

Seriously? Is this still here?

Maybe you become anxious in a familiar situation. You over-function. You shut down. You begin trying to please everyone, prove yourself, or get everything exactly right.

And sometimes the hardest part isn’t even the response itself.

It’s what comes next.

I thought I dealt with this.
Shouldn’t I be beyond this by now?
After all the work I’ve done, why am I still doing this?

I had one of those moments recently while preparing for an upcoming interview.

What happened reminded me of something I believe is deeply important about healing: the return of an old survival response does not necessarily mean we have gone backwards.

In this week’s audio reflection, I share what happened, the historical instruction I found myself meeting once again, and why I’ve come to understand its return very differently.

What if healing was never meant to guarantee that an old response would never appear again?

Our living systems carry historical learning about what has helped us remain safe, connected, significant and included. Under certain conditions, that learning may become active again — even when we understand it, have worked with it, and have met it many times before.

Perhaps the more meaningful question is not:

Why is this still here?

But:

What is it about this moment that makes this response intelligent?

That shift changes the relationship we have with ourselves.

We don’t have to obey the old instruction.

And we don’t have to reject or shame it either.

We can become curious about what our system is communicating while also becoming aware of the reality and possibilities available to us today.

The historical signal may still arise, but it no longer has to determine what happens next.

Perhaps that is one of the freedoms healing makes possible.

If this way of understanding yourself speaks to you, our free Map of Being Human is a lovely place to continue exploring the different signals, systems and experiences that shape how we meet our lives.
