The Survival Costs We No Longer Need to Keep Paying

In my last audio reflection, I shared what happened when my body delivered a very clear capacity signal during my recent Alaska cruise – and another, far more demanding voice immediately tried to override it. If you haven’t listened yet, it’s here.

That experience left me curious about why respecting present-day capacity can be so surprisingly difficult.

Why does stopping for rest sometimes feel dangerous?

Why can rest evoke shame?

And why do so many of us continue forcing ourselves long after our biology has communicated that it needs something different?

These questions become especially important for therapists, coaches and wellness practitioners. In our sincere desire to help, it is possible to mistake pressure for progress, or, to unknowingly reinforce the very patterns that have kept a person overriding themselves for years.

In this part 2 audio reflection, I explore the relationship between present-day biological signals and what I call the historical blueprint: the deeply learned adaptations that once helped us remain safe, valued and included.

Both signals are real. But they are carrying information from very different moments in time.

Would you rather listen or read today?

Perhaps the question is not simply whether you are capable of continuing.

Perhaps the more conscious question is:

What is it costing my biology to continue – and is that a survival cost I still need to pay?

You might also gently notice:

  • What is my present-day biology communicating?
  • What does my historical blueprint predict will happen if I respect that signal?
  • Which response is grounded in present reality, and which may be carrying forward an adaptation from the past?

For practitioners, there is another important question:

Can I remain present with this person’s biological truth without recruiting them into my own historical relationship with productivity, progress and worth?
