INFORMED CONSENT ABOUT EFT (EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES)

As part of the information provided on this website, you understand that you will be introduced to a modality identified as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) which is part of a newly-emerging family of energy-based coaching, therapy and self-development techniques.  This family of techniques is variably referred to as Energy Psychology, Energy Meridian Techniques and/or Energy Methods.  Included in this family are a variety of alternative and complementary techniques that are believed to manipulate and modify imbalances within a person’s energy system as well as resolve limitations imposed by those imbalances on an individual’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours. The premise of this family of techniques is that releasing disturbances in the body’s electromagnetic field as well as its subtle energy field is beneficial for physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.  Many of the techniques in this family, including EFT, use gentle tapping on selected surface points of the face and body that are part of the ancient Chinese meridian system while holding the mind focused on the disturbing situation. While EFT has produced excellent clinical results for relieving emotional and physical distress and is supported by a significant and growing body of scientific research, it is still a relatively new approach and should be considered to be in the experimental stage.   Western academic and medical communities have not yet fully researched the risks and benefits and so you must take complete responsibility for your use of EFT. Information provided about EFT or any of the family of energy-based techniques on this website is not intended to represent that EFT is used to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or psychological disorder.  Nor is EFT in any way a substitute for medical or psychological treatment. You are encouraged to seek professional advice as appropriate before making health decisions. Nancy Forrester, founder and Executive Director of NeftTI was a former psychotherapist for 25 years (now retired)  and is now a coach and mentor.  She is Certified and Accredited in EFT at the highest level of Master EFT Trainer of Trainers and Mentor.  Nancy is not a regulated mental health or medical professional in her home province of Ontario, Canada.

PROFESSIONAL VS NOVICE USE OF EFT

Over the past several years, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and its nickname, tapping, have become highly popular and readily accessible via the internet, eBooks and printed materials.  Novices are able to learn the basic technique from such sources and often enthusiastically tap on all kinds of issues, unaware of the risks and limitations of their unskilled approach. They tap along with audios, videos and written scripts often enjoying the ‘in the moment’ release of tension that often accompanies tapping on acupressure points. Some of these novices become so enthralled with their tapping results that they offer their services as ‘EFT Practitioners’ on a fee for service basis. The National EFT Training Institute point of view is that Emotional Freedom Techniques is a profoundly effective tool in releasing resistance to change and improving an individual’s ability to manage stress.   Used skillfully, EFT facilitates major releases in resistance to improved physical and emotional health, wealth, relationships and work satisfaction.  However, the ability to facilitate such profound transformation requires an investment and commitment to learning and practicing the techniques in a professional manner such as taught in the National Emotional Freedom Techniques Training Institute live training and certification programs.  NeftTI’s training and certification programs are based on the Gold Standard EFT as created by EFT founder Gary Craig and presented in his Gold Standard EFT online tutorial (www.emofree.com). Without such training, novices can unwittingly open a door to emotional or physical sensations or unresolved memories that they do not have the training or professional support to process.  Even though basic EFT training is freely accessible, you are strongly advised to pursue professional quality training and guidance in order to use EFT with others or with yourself beyond a very surface level. EFT and Emotional Freedom Techniques are registered trademarks of EFT founder Gary Craig and they are used here with permission.
