Expanding Psychotherapy Horizons

Last Saturday was a huge milestone for the evolution of Energy Psychology/Emotional Freedom Techniques in Canada. I presented a 3-hour workshop at the annual conference of the Medical Doctor Psychotherapy Association of Canada.

The theme of the conference was ‘Expanding Psychotherapy Horizons’ and included a fascinating combination of keynotes and workshops. The keynote before my presentation was ‘Advances in Consciousness – Research with Implications for Psychotherapy with Dr. Imants Baruss. Delegates could then choose to attend my workshop on Energy Psychology/EFT or ‘Neuroplasticity Accessibility’ by Dr. Sheldon Joseph or ‘The Future of Neuromodulation for Depression’ with Dr. Jeff Daskalakis.

The audience was equally split between these options.

In my presentation I spent some time sharing what Energy Psychology/EFT is, its history, supporting research and the benefits to patients and clinicians. Then we progressed into the practice section of the workshop.

Attendees were introduced to the basics of ‘Bronze’ tapping for self-regulation and stress management. The physicians were totally engaged – tapping on their faces, their fingertips –lots of yawning and sighing happening! And fabulous, insightful questions and realizations shared throughout the afternoon. We were even able to do a little ‘Gold’ EFT on their top 5 current stressors. I loved the comment of one doctor psychotherapist who did one round of EFT on their top stressor and called me over to say ‘wow, I thought this was just a cognitive thing – but I’m shocked I’m feeling so much emotion!’

At the end of the workshop, I asked people to re-expose their nervous systems to the file card where they had written their 5 stressors and to mark their intensity now on a 0-10 scale. When asked to raise their hand if they had experienced a change in intensity from the beginning of the workshop – everyone in the room raised their hand!

Many doctor/psychotherapists expressed interest in staying connected with NeftTI and pursuing DISCOVER the POWER of CONSCIOUS EFT training. I’m very pleased with that. It’s been a vision of mine and NeftTI’s that professional standard EFT be available through our provincial publicly funded health insurance plans.

And finally, a big thank you to Vij Richards for doing this presentation with me. Vij is a registered nurse and registered psychotherapist with a specialty in Occupational Health for medical professionals. She also has a private practice in Milton/Guelph. She uses Conscious EFT extensively in both these forums and is currently finishing her Advanced EFT Practitioner certification with Neftti.

Happy Tapping,

Nancy
